The Apex Challenge hike #2 to the summit of Black Crater on 7/23/16 was a fantastic success! We had a beautiful day for hiking on Saturday morning with cool morning temperatures and a very scenic trail which started in the forest off Old McKenzie highway, 3 miles from the Dee Wright Observatory. We got on the trail about 7:15 a.m. and hiked for about 2.5 hours to the summit. It is a great hike that I highly recommend due to the variety of the terrain and moderate slope to the summit which is 3.7 miles from the start and gains 2400 feet of elevation gain. Join the Apex Challenge: July update!

On Saturday, June 25th, nine motivated hikers met in Sisters at 8 a.m. to head for the summit of Black Butte. It was a beautiful morning with clear skies and a comfortable temperature of 58 degrees. We caravanned to the trailhead on 5 miles of bumpy dirt roads once turning onto the access road to Black Butte trailhead. After a short talk about what to expect from the hike and making sure everyone was prepared, we started heading up the trail just after 9 am.
